In depth
x402 is a proposal by Coinbase and Cloudflare to repurpose the unused HTTP 402 (Payment Required) status code for micropayment requests. When a service endpoint returns 402, the client knows it must pay via stablecoin before accessing the resource. This elegantly integrates payment into the HTTP layer, enabling micropayments without custom protocols. It's part of Stripe and Cloudflare's Category A strategy.
